tower power
while in new york, i visited the relatively new (opened 2008) museum of art and design (MAD!) for a show called slash: paper under the knife. the time and precision and patience these pieces require blew my mind, as did the innovation and creativity using such a simple material. i always love paper and working with it and seeing the potential in all its different forms and shapes. my favorite piece was certainly michael veliquette's "tower power," a rainbow totem of fringed paper, curling tendrils, technicolor garlands all crawling with mini-monsters and secret . it was stunning and alive and the fruit offerings at the bottom of the tower just won my heart.....i'm determined to recreate those! tonight maybe? you must see his work in person, it's simply exudes joy and celebration!
